1929. No place in America felt the effects of the Great Depression worse than the place where it at least started: New York City. Decades before the crash, European and domestic rural immigrants had been rushing into New York, causing the city’s population to double in the 20 years before the crash, bursting at the seams with life and language and energy. Job prospects were already slight, but Sanitary Plumbing’s core customers had always been the people, and the people still needed hot running water and drinkable water, and heat. Sanitary survived, but along the way, saw a high-quality but cash-strapped Boiler company that was struggling, but with great people. So in the same year, Sanitary Plumbing brought Calray Gas Heat into the fold, and both companies have been run by one family, the Clarks. Even today, it’s led by brothers Harris and Jonathan Clark. They are the third generation of Clarks since their grandfather took Calray under its wing almost one hundred years ago. Today it is one of the pre-eminent heating and boiler companies in New York City, recently expanding its reach to Westchester County (in 2019).
The company was one of the original “hyper-locals”, that is, always headquartered in New York City, today in the Bronx and all of us collectively – managers, technicians, and customers- hail from all of New York’s Boroughs. “Family” has always been one of our core values, from our team to customers. Thus our tagline: “Professionals helping Neighbors”.
We take the science with service of heating and boilers seriously, as it, like our sister services, keeps your homes running so you can enjoy home without having to think about it.
Some of our Calray colleagues have been with us for over two decades, some for two weeks. All of them are a critical part of the Calray family. I was first introduced to the world of in-home and building mechanics when working for Vermont Mechanical. However, I started as a driver there, and one week received an emergency call to come and assist in an insulation job. I knew nothing hands-on about insulation, but boy did I learn fast (and loved it). Since then, I’ve trained thoroughly in several specialties, and I love the work, as it means I can travel, meet lots of different people, and get to do different things everyday…one day I could be on a roof, the next deep underground in a mechanical room, the next working in a boiler room. I feel like I have to solve a new elaborate puzzle every day, and I do. I love my work!
