Our Purpose

Food, water, shelter, heat. Many of us take this for granted.

But while these “necessities” are assumed by many of us, as we also have to focus on work, and families, and a thousand other tasks and responsibilities and pressures competing for our attention, losing your heat, or hot water can throw a monkey wrench into the middle of your life, or if you are a building owner, many lives.

Cathy

Which is why Calray has been the “go to” boiler and heat company for New York City’s building, apartments, and homes for close to a century.

Our Purpose is to restore that secure feeling of a home (or building) as an oasis from the stressors of outside life, whenever something that shouldn’t go wrong, inevitably does. Whether you’re a home or building owner, we restore comfort and peace of mind for you, for your personal heat or your customer’s anxieties. We do it by fixing the support systems that provide heat and hot water for civilized living and by installing the best boilers money can buy so you don’t have to worry about heat and hot water for years*.

* Though we recommend you have Calray do periodic equipment checks and maintenance as an inexpensive insurance policy against abnormal wear/tear.

Gas Boiler Replacement

The average life expectancy of a residential boiler is 20 to 25 years. If your boiler is nearing this age, then you should call Calray now to begin gathering the necessary information to replace your boiler before it’s too late. If you have already had the heartbreaking trip to the basement to find your boiler leaking or inoperable, then please call us now so we can help! Our staff will kindly visit to discuss your building’s needs during the harshest winter day. We will gladly provide a free estimate to help restore the needed heat to your building. For those with oil heat, we will happily discuss the benefits of switching to clean, safe gas heat (oil to gas conversion).

Oil to Gas Conversion

Natural gas is an efficient, safe, and reliable fuel source. It costs less than heating oil, and is one of the cleanest-burning fuels available. Converting to natural gas will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the air quality in your community. Help make a cleaner, greener New York. Choose natural gas today!

A typical Oil to Gas Conversion will pay for itself in as soon as 24 months! And, on average, customers save 100% to over 200% on their heating bills.

The U.S. Energy Information Admin provided these cost comparisons:

Heating w/ oil — $2,085 per household

Heating w/ Propane (Midwest) — $1,584 per household

Heating w/ Natural gas — $674 per household

Additionally:

Gas Heat is Cleaner. Natural gas is cleaner than oil, which means less carbon emissions are released into the air.

Gas Boilers Burn Cleaner. With gas there are no odors, soot, or fumes to clean or inhale.

Gas Heat Provides Dependability: Natural gas is a reliable, AMERICAN-made resource.

Maintenance Agreements

There is nothing better for your heating system than annual maintenance. Annual maintenance allows your system to work at peak efficiency year in and year out. A system that is maintained annually experiences considerably fewer breakdowns. You’ll enjoy the peace of mind in knowing that your system is saving you money on your utility bills every time it comes on. In some instances, especially with the high gas, the energy savings could be enough to pay the cost of the planned annual maintenance service.

Gas Leak Inspection Service

Often times, gas lines have small and undetectable (by odor) gas leaks. Our inspectors use advanced testing equipment to check for these and other leaks.

Gas leak detection is the process of identifying gas leaks in a building or home using specialized equipment, for example a combustible gas leak detector, and specialized training to be compliant with New York city laws (e.g. including Local Law 152). Calray’s techs are trained to detect both natural –and propane- gas the types more commonly used for supplying power heating systems, water heaters, dryers, stoves, etc.

Why You Should Check for Gas Leaks

Most gas leaks found during a gas leak detection test are found at gas pipe connections and are small and well below levels that would cause explosion or be considered hazardous- if detected ahead of time. These types of leaks waste gas and cost a property owner’s money, similar to a dripping sink faucet or running toilet.

In some cases, we do find significant and potentially dangerous gas leaks that home dwellers and owners, and building owners were not aware of. If you have natural gas or propane gas in your home or building, having a gas leak detection test performed can provide you identify areas where your gas piping and connections need repair.

Of course, with buildings and New York Cities recently passed local law 152, there is a strong legal (and even stronger financial/cost preventative) reason to have a gas leak detection specialist, such as Calray, do an at least annual preventative test.

Gas Leak Repair Service

Already facing the “red tag”, and know you need to repair an unexpected leak quickly, but professionally? In New York City, you need a licensed gas leak repair technician to do so in order to get proper sign-off from the DOB with your proof or repair.

You could call a fledgling “24 hour emergency” service company, and pay 3-4X the cost of normal service and materials-or-

You could call Calray – 90% of the time can schedule and complete within 24 hours; 100% within 48 hours- for expert service, but at normal Calray rates.

Water Heater Repair and Replacement

There are many different ways a building can provide hot water to its occupants. A traditional water heater (gas or electric) is the most common way. Our factory trained technicians are familiar with most major manufacturers and carry the most common repair parts. Is your existing water heater leaking? Call us today for a free estimate. Give us a call and we will have our trained specialists assist you with this project!

Pipe Insulation

We can upgrade your home (or building) with “green” improvements that save you serious money. This includes insulating the pipes around your home or building making it more energy-efficient by reducing the amount of heat that you lose while increasing the overall temperature of water being delivered by several degrees. Of course, insulating exposed pipes, is one of the bare necessities of winterizing, preventing freezing when the needle starts dropping in the fall.

Eliminating Steam Banging

Banging in a steam heating system often is caused when steam comes into contact with cooler condensate (water). Other causes of banging might be a dirty boiler or a back pitched pipe. But if you have an older system, or one that wasn’t installed by steam heating experts, or one that has had incorrect modifications (e.g. using the shut-off valve to try to regulate the heat), you –or one of your customers- may be faced with what we refer to in the trade as “the angry ghost of Jon Bonham”; and the sounds of banging metal are enjoyed by few.

Whether it’s an errant valve, or systemic failure, Calray can quickly locate the root cause and fix or replace what’s needed to return your peace and quiet often in the same day we visit.

Heating Controls & Thermostats

Maintaining & Fixing Thermostats and Heating Controls

Calray has maintained and fixed thermostats and heating controls from single family homes to multi-family buildings throughout the New York Metro area for over half a century.  Even when thermostat issues come up on a separate job, Calray techs have the skills and most often the right parts on hand to maintain or even fix and replace every issue and almost every part, respectively.

Of course, we love to help improve any customer’s energy efficiency (and save them money on heating bills), while adding comfort to their home or buildings.  We are a Heating Supply and Service Company, focused on our customer’s comfort, not a gas and oil company!

With that said, we often provide digital system upgrades for old and outdated (and energy wasting) systems, and stock only high-quality & reliable brands specific to single family home up to multi-family building needs.   These brands include Heat-Timer® and Tekmar® to Ecobee® and Nest®

And regardless if you are a homeowner or multi-family building owner, we don’t just “set it and forget it”, but can show you how to set up, program and adjust your new equipment to get the most out of it; from basic Temperature Control to Zoned Temperature to Zones Comfort Control.

Improving Energy Efficiency; Digital Upgrades

Calray can help you control the temperature and comfort of your building/units or home with a digital thermostat.  We can also repair and maintain your existing digital thermostat, or of course, your traditional heating system or thermostat (s).  If your system isn’t running to the best of its abilities, it could be consuming more energy than it needs to and not providing the comfort it should.

Temperature Control (Thermostats & Zoned Comfort Control Systems)

A Digital Thermostat controls not only your units’ or home’s heating and cooling, but overall comfort. A properly designed thermostat can do much more than just turn your heating system on and off. While you usually think of thermostats as just controlling your home’s temperature, we view thermostats as your easy-to-use command center that lets you control and customize your entire home’s, floor or unit’s comfort experience.

What is the single easiest way to get higher performance from your existing heating and cooling system while lowering your home’s overall energy costs? Simply install a Programmable Thermostat.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a programmable thermostat can save you up to 30% on energy costs annually.

If you’re interested in getting the very best in temperature control for every room in your home or unit in your building, a Zoned Comfort Control system is your answer. Instead of using just one thermostat for your entire home, a Zoned Comfort Control system uses multiple thermostats to ensure optimum temperature levels and total comfort in every room of your home.

Zoned Temperature Control

One room too hot while another is too cold? Not with Zoned Comfort Control. A Zoned Comfort Control system extends this simple, energy-saving concept to home temperature control. The only place where the temperature matches the thermostat is at the thermostat. Different areas of your house have different temperature needs as do individual family members. Different units of your building need to accommodate different individuals’ and family temperature preferences.  What may be cool to one person may be warm to another.

Zoned Comfort Control

Zoned Comfort Control is a system of more than one thermostat, electrically connected to a control panel which operates a number of dampers in your forced air heating/cooling system. Conditioned air is then distributed to various parts of your home as needed. The system can be installed in new or existing homes helping you achieve total indoor comfort. Plus there is no service required — only changes in living habits may make it necessary for system adjustments from time to time.

Zoned Comfort Control in your building or home makes sense if it has one or more of these:

  • It contains more than one level
  • There are large, open areas such as vaulted ceilings or lofts, an atrium or a solarium
  • It has a room or rooms with expansive glass areas
  • Family lifestyles dictate different temperatures in different areas of the home, or individual unit families have different temperature preferences. (Which can be often age-related as much as individual preference related)
  • Heating and cooling temperature patterns vary at different times of the day

No matter what type of thermostat or heating system you use, Calray can fix or maintain it, or provide the right digital system upgrade to customize to your building’s families or your own family’s specific heating and comfort preferences.
